Have you wondered, while sitting at a fume-choked toll plaza, whether this makes any sense? Have you asked yourself if it might be simpler to fund these roads out of gasoline-tax or other general revenue, like most of the national interstate system? [...]
"Tolls are a very inefficient method of taxation versus fuel and income taxes," they say in the current Transportation Quarterly magazine.
The two academics (Kramer teaches at St. Joseph's University; Peters at the City College of New York) calculated the total cost of the Garden State Parkway's toll system, and weighed that against the amount of revenue the system generates.
That total bill includes not only the amount spent to maintain and administer the toll plazas. It also includes what motorists lose in time and gasoline while they're waiting in lines, as well as the extra pollution generated by all those backed-up cars.
Put it all together, and you get more than 37 cents for every dollar collected at the toll plazas, the researchers estimate. By contrast, state and federal government agencies spend as little as 3 cents to collect a dollar via the income tax or gasoline tax.

For anybody who's interested, the training aspect is going extremely well. Last weekend I completed a 20-mile run, which is the longest distance prescribed in my training program. That means the hard part of the training is over, and I'm ready to go to the starting line once I give my body a few weeks to recover by "tapering" my milage. Hoo-yeah! I'll let you know how things turn out after I race on October 26.
